A semi-acoustic guitar or hollow-body electric is a type of electric guitar that originates from the 1930s. It has both a sound box and one or more electric pickups. This is not the same as an acoustic-electric guitar, which is an acoustic guitar with the addition of pickups or other means of amplification, added by either the manufacturer or the player.
In the 1930s guitar players and manufacturers were attempting to increase the overall volume of the guitar, which had a hard time competing in loudness with other instruments—especially in large orchestras and jazz bands. This led makers to try a series of designs that focused on amplifying a guitar electrically through a loudspeaker. In 1936, Gibson made their first production run of electric guitars. These guitars, known as ES-150s (Electric Spanish Series) were the first manufactured semi-acoustic guitars.
The basic difference between these three types of guitars is the structure and density of the body and sound holes.
In an acoustic guitar, the body is hollow and the sound hole is deeper so as to produce better resonance. This makes it lighter.
A Semi-acoustic guitar, on the other hand, has a hollow body but has a thinner sound hole than an acoustic guitar. If you have seen the difference in images between the two
there is a visible difference in the depth of sound holes of the two guitars.
What difference does the sound hole make?
If you know the basic principle of how the guitar works, you might know that resonance of sound in the sound hole is what determines the tone and volume of a guitar. Another major contributor to the tone and volume is the quality of the wood used (i.e. the density of wood). For the acoustic guitar, the wood used is less thick than the semi-acoustic and hence allows the sound to resonate much more in the sound hole producing a louder sound and a clearer tone.
Semi-acoustic, on the other hand, use thicker wood (hence the sweet tone) and hence has a lesser volume when played without an amplifier. The semi-acoustic tends to be the intermediate of acoustic (hollow and deep soundhole) and the electric (not hollow and no sound hole). This is the major difference between the acoustic and the semi-acoustic guitar. This makes it necessary to use an amplifier with the semi-acoustic guitar when playing to a larger audience.
Pros of semi-electric :
1. Produces a similar (rather better) tone than the acoustic guitar
2. When plugged, can produce better electronic effects (i.e. amplifier effects) than an acoustic guitar.
3. Can be played without plugging (unlike electric).
Cons of semi-electric :
1. Lesser volume than acoustic
2. Damping not as good as electric guitar
3. Produces bad results when used with distortion or overdrive effects on an amplifier
